2008: The year of…

Posted in Uncategorized on December 31, 2008 by Bentoh

Change?

Got quite a number of entries to write on, but meanwhile I’m getting more and more lazy… LOL~~

So I decided to write a bye-bye-2008 short entry… before writing the new year resolution (which is usually not achieved) like everyone else~

2008 is the year I re-enter NUS to study for my Master… Bah, lousy year for my Master project… :(   The project progressed so slowly, mostly due to my own problems… Sigh…

2008 is also the year which I first voted in a general election… I still remember taking bus right after a Changi-beach practical to go back home in KL, and vote in the following afternoon. And then did some crazy things driving around the city with a rocket flag and some then parliament candidates posters. Thanks to Malaysiakini, I was then in Xiang’s house following up and celebrating(!) the results. It was a truly amazing event that made malaysian politics so much more “entertaining”…

Oh by the way, Malaysiakini named Malaysians the newsmaker of the year… Well deserved!

Bye bye 2008, too bad I’ll most probably celebrate the new year’s arrival in Maplestory~~

UHWC and my leg…

Posted in Life on December 13, 2008 by Bentoh

A lump suddenly appeared last weekend on my inner thigh, and made me feel painful even just walking around…

So I decided to see doctor at Wednesday at UHWC…

And Ohhhh Myyyy GOD, it cost me SGD 21.6!!!!! For your information, it’s about 1/75 of my monthly salary!!!! I was shocked when asked to pay for that amount, and remained shocked even after I took my medicine. So I actually read the receipt only after I left the UHWC…

Receipt

10 dollars for consultation fee!!!!! Since when we need to pay consultation fee in UHWC??!!!! Maybe, just maybe, someone suggested that it’s because I’m now a postgraduate student… sheesh… :(

MedPack

The antibiotics, whatever amoxycillin and clavulanic acid, cost me 9.2/10 tablets, and the painkiller cost 1 dollar/10 tablets… I guess this is why poor people always refuse to see doctor, and so happen I was that poor student happily seeing doctor in UWHC thinking I won’t need to pay much…

Medhand

The antibiotic sure is BIG…

Anyway, doc said it could be due to a muscle torn in my thigh (most probably because of some hardcore running), causing bleeding and eventual clotting AND/OR some bacteria so happened to choose to live and grow happily over that area. If the lump doesn’t shrink after I finish the antibiotics, doc said maybe I should get my leg cut open and see what it really is… =/

No exercising for now… Let’s see if how much I’ll spend for my leg~~

Human rights

Posted in Life, Politics, Random on December 10, 2008 by Bentoh

Well, in 10th December 1948, during the United Nation General Assembly at Paris, Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) were tabled and adopted. 10th December was then declared as Human rights day.

Today, is the 60th anniversary of human rights day. Secretary General of UN, Mr Ban Ki-moon (Not Kofi Annan already, in case you still living in stone age… :P ) launched a year-long campaign last year, with a theme of “Dignity and justice for all of us”.

The UDHR comprises of 30 articles. Some examples are:

Article 1
All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.

Article 2
Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration, without distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. Furthermore, no distinction shall be made on the basis of the political, jurisdictional or international status of the country or territory to which a person belongs, whether it be independent, trust, non-self-governing or under any other limitation of sovereignty.

Article 9
None shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention or exile.

Article 26
1. Everyone has the right to education. Education shall be free, at least in the elementary and fundamental stages. Elementary education shall be compulsory. Technical and professional education shall be made generally available and higher education shall be equally accessible to all on the basis of merit….

Learn more about it here.

Come to think of it, Malaysia should be kicked out from UN long long time ago… but then I guess UN won’t have much members by then~

Alleged Jemaah Islamiah (neh, still remember Mat Selamat Kasturi kan?) terrorists were released from ISA this morning by that botak Home minister… But about 50 other including the famous (or infamous to BN people) HINDRAF 5 are still in, for god knows what reasons…

Police continue to harass and arrest Jerit people, who recently launched a cycling campaign to send memorandum to the Prime Minister. Cycling also cannot ah!

Anti-ISA candlelight vigil that disallowed candle lighting and wearing anti-ISA T-shirts, only in Malaysia OK?

And then Menteri Besar (Chief Minister) from Selangor suggested to “demonstrate” inside Multi purpose hall, and at most 15 minutes outdoor demo…

By the way, Spain is extending right to apes… too bad, many people in the countries which endorsed UDHR are worse than Spanish apes…

Anyway, Minister of Dis-information Shabery Cheek blamed the stupid residents in Bkt antarabangsa for buying fancy “hillview” houses, and said that the residents should not hantam (slam) the government for the landslide because they themselves took the risk…

Maybe next time government should order the houses to bear some sort of “landslidable” sign,

before selling them out? Like those flammable chemical…

Hari raya Aidil Adha…

Posted in Life, Random on December 8, 2008 by Bentoh

Today is Hari raya Haji, Eid al-Adha, Aidil Adha, Korban…

Seriously I’ve been enjoying this holiday for 24 years, and I still got not much idea about what this day really is…

So, wikipedia is your friend remember? ;)

Eid al-Adha is the “official term” of the “Festival of Sacrifice”, which falls on the 10th day of 12th month of Islamic calendar.

Aidil Adha is a local term of Eid al-Adha, while Korban means sacrifice.

It is said that the Prophet (nabi) Ibrahim (Abraham) was told to sacrifice his son, Is’mail, as an act of obedience to the God (Allah, Malaysian government argued that you should not use this term if you are not muslim, and “worse”, a Christian wor). He was tempted by devil to not do so, but eventually decided to obey the God. The God intervened, and provided a lamb for sacrifice, instead of Is’mail…

And so during this day, muslims sacrifice their best domestic animals, sheep or cow.

So happen that the pilgrimage to Mecca, Hajj, is performed during this period, and so it is also Hari Raya Haji.

It seems like the cube, the Kaaba, was built back in Ibrahim’s time. Ibrahim’s son Is’mail discovered a well in this exact location, and hence managed to stay alive by selling water to the roaming nomads. The well later nourished the born of a city, called Mecca.

So yeah, Selamat Hari raya Aidil Adha, Happy holiday, and well, remember the spirit of sacrifice~

All of these are partially copied from wikipedia ah, anything wrong don’t whack me OK? I never even finish a book on Buddhism (it’s because I’m lazy :P ), so don’t expect me to know anything from Quran and Holy Bible… :P
