2008: The year of…

December 31, 2008 Leave a comment

Change?

Got quite a number of entries to write on, but meanwhile I’m getting more and more lazy… LOL~~

So I decided to write a bye-bye-2008 short entry… before writing the new year resolution (which is usually not achieved) like everyone else~

2008 is the year I re-enter NUS to study for my Master… Bah, lousy year for my Master project… 😦  The project progressed so slowly, mostly due to my own problems… Sigh…

2008 is also the year which I first voted in a general election… I still remember taking bus right after a Changi-beach practical to go back home in KL, and vote in the following afternoon. And then did some crazy things driving around the city with a rocket flag and some then parliament candidates posters. Thanks to Malaysiakini, I was then in Xiang’s house following up and celebrating(!) the results. It was a truly amazing event that made malaysian politics so much more “entertaining”…

Oh by the way, Malaysiakini named Malaysians the newsmaker of the year… Well deserved!

Bye bye 2008, too bad I’ll most probably celebrate the new year’s arrival in Maplestory~~

历史的误差?

December 16, 2008 2 comments

UHWC and my leg…

December 13, 2008 2 comments

A lump suddenly appeared last weekend on my inner thigh, and made me feel painful even just walking around…

So I decided to see doctor at Wednesday at UHWC…

And Ohhhh Myyyy GOD, it cost me SGD 21.6!!!!! For your information, it’s about 1/75 of my monthly salary!!!! I was shocked when asked to pay for that amount, and remained shocked even after I took my medicine. So I actually read the receipt only after I left the UHWC…

Receipt

10 dollars for consultation fee!!!!! Since when we need to pay consultation fee in UHWC??!!!! Maybe, just maybe, someone suggested that it’s because I’m now a postgraduate student… sheesh… 😦

MedPack

The antibiotics, whatever amoxycillin and clavulanic acid, cost me 9.2/10 tablets, and the painkiller cost 1 dollar/10 tablets… I guess this is why poor people always refuse to see doctor, and so happen I was that poor student happily seeing doctor in UWHC thinking I won’t need to pay much…

Medhand

The antibiotic sure is BIG…

Anyway, doc said it could be due to a muscle torn in my thigh (most probably because of some hardcore running), causing bleeding and eventual clotting AND/OR some bacteria so happened to choose to live and grow happily over that area. If the lump doesn’t shrink after I finish the antibiotics, doc said maybe I should get my leg cut open and see what it really is… =/

No exercising for now… Let’s see if how much I’ll spend for my leg~~

Human rights

December 10, 2008 Leave a comment

Well, in 10th December 1948, during the United Nation General Assembly at Paris, Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) were tabled and adopted. 10th December was then declared as Human rights day.

Today, is the 60th anniversary of human rights day. Secretary General of UN, Mr Ban Ki-moon (Not Kofi Annan already, in case you still living in stone age… 😛 ) launched a year-long campaign last year, with a theme of “Dignity and justice for all of us”.

The UDHR comprises of 30 articles. Some examples are:

Article 1
All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.

Article 2
Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration, without distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. Furthermore, no distinction shall be made on the basis of the political, jurisdictional or international status of the country or territory to which a person belongs, whether it be independent, trust, non-self-governing or under any other limitation of sovereignty.

Article 9
None shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention or exile.

Article 26
1. Everyone has the right to education. Education shall be free, at least in the elementary and fundamental stages. Elementary education shall be compulsory. Technical and professional education shall be made generally available and higher education shall be equally accessible to all on the basis of merit….

Learn more about it here.

Come to think of it, Malaysia should be kicked out from UN long long time ago… but then I guess UN won’t have much members by then~

Alleged Jemaah Islamiah (neh, still remember Mat Selamat Kasturi kan?) terrorists were released from ISA this morning by that botak Home minister… But about 50 other including the famous (or infamous to BN people) HINDRAF 5 are still in, for god knows what reasons…

Police continue to harass and arrest Jerit people, who recently launched a cycling campaign to send memorandum to the Prime Minister. Cycling also cannot ah!

Anti-ISA candlelight vigil that disallowed candle lighting and wearing anti-ISA T-shirts, only in Malaysia OK?

And then Menteri Besar (Chief Minister) from Selangor suggested to “demonstrate” inside Multi purpose hall, and at most 15 minutes outdoor demo…

By the way, Spain is extending right to apes… too bad, many people in the countries which endorsed UDHR are worse than Spanish apes…

Anyway, Minister of Dis-information Shabery Cheek blamed the stupid residents in Bkt antarabangsa for buying fancy “hillview” houses, and said that the residents should not hantam (slam) the government for the landslide because they themselves took the risk…

Maybe next time government should order the houses to bear some sort of “landslidable” sign,

before selling them out? Like those flammable chemical…

Hari raya Aidil Adha…

December 8, 2008 14 comments

Today is Hari raya Haji, Eid al-Adha, Aidil Adha, Korban…

Seriously I’ve been enjoying this holiday for 24 years, and I still got not much idea about what this day really is…

So, wikipedia is your friend remember? 😉

Eid al-Adha is the “official term” of the “Festival of Sacrifice”, which falls on the 10th day of 12th month of Islamic calendar.

Aidil Adha is a local term of Eid al-Adha, while Korban means sacrifice.

It is said that the Prophet (nabi) Ibrahim (Abraham) was told to sacrifice his son, Is’mail, as an act of obedience to the God (Allah, Malaysian government argued that you should not use this term if you are not muslim, and “worse”, a Christian wor). He was tempted by devil to not do so, but eventually decided to obey the God. The God intervened, and provided a lamb for sacrifice, instead of Is’mail…

And so during this day, muslims sacrifice their best domestic animals, sheep or cow.

So happen that the pilgrimage to Mecca, Hajj, is performed during this period, and so it is also Hari Raya Haji.

It seems like the cube, the Kaaba, was built back in Ibrahim’s time. Ibrahim’s son Is’mail discovered a well in this exact location, and hence managed to stay alive by selling water to the roaming nomads. The well later nourished the born of a city, called Mecca.

So yeah, Selamat Hari raya Aidil Adha, Happy holiday, and well, remember the spirit of sacrifice~

All of these are partially copied from wikipedia ah, anything wrong don’t whack me OK? I never even finish a book on Buddhism (it’s because I’m lazy 😛 ), so don’t expect me to know anything from Quran and Holy Bible… 😛

Landslide…

December 6, 2008 Leave a comment

It hit the headline in most news portal this morning… the landslide in Bukit Antarabangsa, Selangor.

(Picture from The Malaysian Insider)

淡江, Ulu Klang… This is the place where you have all the fancy houses and condominiums built on hillside. And over the years, several landslides occured, and killed a number of people.

In 1993, when I was primary 3, one of the 3-block Highland Towers in Taman Hillview, Ulu Klang collapsed due to a landslide. 48 people were trapped and killed, I remember the rescue operations were widely reported, I remember the story of how some still warm bodies being retrieved at the 8th day of rescue OP. And I still remember a maid together with a kid were rescued after not eating and drinking for few days…

Highland Towers are still standing tall in Taman Hillview today, perhaps it is a good site for a memorial park, perhaps not… because no one dares to live in the condominiums anymore…

1999, another landslide in Bkt Antarabangsa occured. 2002, A bungalow in again Taman Hillview collapsed…

Prime Minister says no more permit for hillside development. Thank you sir, hope you put your money on your mouth…

Condolences to the families of victims… The victims were women, one of them just gave birth not long ago, one another tried to rescue her son and…

Yeah, a tragedy like this always offers us various sad sad sad stories… But we human never learn…

We continue to witness how lots and lots of building standing proud on the slopes and how hills were being cut down, to build more and more housings (in order to accommodate booming population in the city)…

And reports told us that, the supply of housings in Selangor-KL region wayyy surpassed the demand, despite the fact that more housing projects were carried on…

World AIDS day

December 1, 2008 1 comment

I kept thinking today was 31st November… Oh well… Hope by the time I finished writing this blog, it will still be 1st of December~~

In case you do not know, 1st of December is World AIDS day.

And this reminds me to show off some stuff I’d bought back in that balik kampung trip (to attend freedom film festival 😉 ).

Just outside the screening area, there were a number of booths setup by civil society and NGOs, one of them was PT foundation (Pink Triangle).

PT Foundation (previously known as Pink Triangle Sdn Bhd) is a community-based, voluntary non-profit making organization providing HIV/AIDS education, prevention, care and support programmes, sexuality awareness and empowerment programmes for vulnerable communities in Malaysia. We work with 5 vulnerable communities mainly drug users, sex workers, transsexuals, men who have sex with men (MSM), and people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA).

Was approached by them, and I’m not good in rejecting people plus I’d got some money to contribute ( 😛 ), I bought two wrist bands with RM 10, one is red and another is white…

Wrist_band

I like what the wrist band says, Never give up Never forget~

And the interesting calendar…

Calendar

Well, safe sex, wear helmet before you ride on motorcycle OK? 😉

Stop AIDS, keep the promise… apparently Malaysian is not quite there yet… An average of 4000+ of HIV Infection were reported every year… of which more than half of them are drugs user while another less than half of them kena AIDS through pregnancy and sex intercourse… 4 in 10 of the sex workers are HIV+…

I remember ex-Malaysian AIDS Council (MAC) chief and ex-premiere’s daughter Marina Mahathir blogged about how the Ministry of Health (or Hell) refused to propagate use of condom due to some Islam teachings, and requested the MAC to do so…

I remember ex (and axed) Ministry of Health (or Hell) Chua Soi Lek pushed to give away free syringe and needles to drug users… and then… no more news~

Stop AIDS, keep the promise… Stop discriminating HIV+, and better still, stop all discriminations (against an unglam poor desperate researcher… 😛 )
